Globalization
„Yet, regardless of where I begin my thinking about the problems facing our civilization, I always return to the theme of human responsibility, which seems incapable of keeping pace with civilization and preventing it from turning against the human race.“

Editor´s comment

Following pages presents Vaclav Havel as a person and a statesman whose thoughts concerning human society are constantly pervaded by the issue of joint global responsibility. These thoughts are beginning to raise their urgency, because of the progressing phenomenon which we call Globalization. The best proof of Vaclav Havel's interest is, perhaps, his initiative to co-organize, together with the Nippon Foundation, the annual international Conference Forum 2000. Topics of these discussions have always been from the domain of global civilization, cultural co-existential and multi-religious themes. From 26-28 September the 55th Annual Meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group will take place in Prague. On this occasion, not only representatives from more than 180 Bretton Wood Institution member countries but also a number of activists, economists, entrepreneurs, ecologists and journalists from the entire world will come to Prague. First time in the history President Havel invited members of non-governmental organizations, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, politicians, academics, entrepreneurs and journalists to join in a discussion to take place on 23 September 2000 at Prague Castle. As part of this event, prepared under the title „Prague, the Place for Dialogue“, there will also be a panel discussion concerning the problems of globalization and development in the poorest regions of the world.
